“When you analyse what we’ve done this season and last season, you cannot say it isn’t working.” Words of a delusional Louis van Gaal ahead of Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final with West Ham United at Old Trafford. United supporters have kept a remarkable degree of patience over the last 20 months, calmly accepting poor performances and indifferent results as part of the rebuilding process. After Thursday’s defeat at Anfield that patience has snapped.

It is hard to believe that it was only a few weeks ago that Manchester United fans, along with the club’s manager, had conceded defeat in the race for Champions League football. United’s loss at Sunderland left the Reds six points off Manchester City in fourth place, with the Blues having played a game less. Rumours circulated that Louis van Gaal was close to the sack and that José Mourinho had a gentleman’s agreement with the Reds to take over. Fast forward three weeks and none of that has happened, yet. Van Gaal remains United’s manager and has guided his side to within touching distance of City. Game on. Read More

Last Thursday week Manchester United hit rock bottom in Denmark as the Reds suffered yet another defeat under Louis van Gaal. Defeat at Midtjylland was described as the Dutchman’s ‘Olympiacos moment’ and few could see a way back for Van Gaal at United; even the most patient fans had finally lost faith in the veteran manager. Yet, United heads into a run of potentially tricky run of fixtures in fantastic form after three blistering performances in the space of six days. What a difference a few days makes. Read More

“We’re f*cking sh*t,” was the cry from Manchester United’s travelling  fans, who paid £71 to watch, possibly, the worst night in the club’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson history. Louis van Gaal’s side was torn apart by Midtjylland last week – a team that had not played since the 10 December. The Reds truly hit rock bottom in Jutland. Read More

As one door closes, another opens. Manchester United’s top four ambitions were dealt a significant blow last weekend as the Reds lost 2-1 to a relegation-threatened Sunderland side. It all but ended United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. In a week, and indeed a season, where mediocrity has followed United round like a bad smell, few should be surprised that Louis van Gaal’s side finds itself travelling to Denmark on a Thursday night to try and salvage another season. In a week where all the talk around Manchester United has been firmly centred off the pitch it may have escaped many observers that the Reds travel to Sunderland on Saturday searching for the three most important points of the season. Rumours that José Mourinho is coming dominated the headlines early in the week, with many pundits claiming a deal has been completed for the former Chelsea boss to succeed Louis van Gaal in the summer. Then, on Thursday, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward briefed investors that the club is confident of breaking half a billion in revenue by the end of the year. Supporters might be forgiven for thinking everything is going well at Old Trafford. Read More

Manchester United, in fifth, travel to 13th-placed Chelsea on Sunday, with Louis van Gaal’s side seeking to mount a serious challenge for the top four. It is a sentence few would have believed if mentioned in August. Boxing Day 2015. Manchester United, beaten 2-0 by Stoke City, left the Britannia Stadium flattered by a disappointing scoreline. Louis van Gaal marched down the touchline waving at the traveling United fans. Many saw it as an apologetic goodbye; few thought they would see Van Gaal in the dugout again. The defeat left United without a win in seven games over a period that saw the Reds crash out of the Champions League and slip down the domestic table. Read More
