So if anything you might have expected Carrick's performances to look worse in the past few seasons, instead he's taken on a lot of the Fletcher-type putting-himself-about duties, but he's still managed to keep up his passing and game-dictating skills that we got him for in the first place. A bit on the quiet he's become a real monster of a midfielder, there's very few in the world I'd say have been at his level or better over the past two seasons in particular. Hopefully he can maintain this level for a while yet, he doesn't seem to have a crazy lifestyle and he's not in an athleticism-dependent position, relatively speaking.</p> <p>In an attempt to bring this back on topic, I think it's fair to say that Beckham also evolved and took care of himself well after a bit of a wobble. Getting thrown out of United might have been the best thing for him as a footballer, as he knew he had to prove himself on the pitch again. Sadly the same might be true for Rooney now . At Liverpool and Real, Alonso has always benefitted from being part of a three man midfield alongside a water-carrier/defensive type like Mascherano and Khedira, plus an advanced attacking midfielder like Gerrard in his prime and Ozil today.
