Valencia was a 1 trick player... kick it, run and fire in a half decent cross... sometimes

Beckham didn't have the pace, but he could whip in amazing balls from anywhere past the half way line... his floating long balls to set a striker in on goal were unbelievable at times... and he could dig out a cross from ridiculous angles... he didn't quite have Scholes vision or ability to dictate from midfield... but his right foot was every bit as good as Scholes'.

The way he strikes the ball is unique. His understanding of the ball is n all. You can see it in his freekicks, but more so in the belters he scored in open play from unusual angles.

Effectiveness aside???

How can you ignore "effectiveness"... can't dispute Scholes and Keane, but from the moment Beckham beat Sullivan from the half way line, he was consistantly effective...

Giggs on the other hand... for the first several years, was known for a shit end product... he could dribble opposing players into cramps, but his crossing was shit compared to Beckham, and he was easily the worst passer of the 3.

Also, Spain and Italy suited Beckham, they have not been very pacey leagues for a while. Probably over the past decade or so, Beckham might have started to look a bit of a liability in England or Germany, where players on the flanks in particular have gotten really bloody fast.

What's particularly impressed me about Carrick over the past few seasons is that he has clearly risen to the challenge -- once Fletch got crocked we haven't had any kind of box-to-box defensive water carrier type at all. So if anything you might have expected Carrick's performances to look worse in the past few seasons, instead he's taken on a lot of the Fletcher-type putting-himself-about duties, but he's still managed to keep up his passing and game-dictating skills that we got him for in the first place. A bit on the quiet he's become a real monster of a midfielder, there's very few in the world I'd say have been at his level or better over the past two seasons in particular. Hopefully he can maintain this level for a while yet, he doesn't seem to have a crazy lifestyle and he's not in an athleticism-dependent position, relatively speaking.

In an attempt to bring this back on topic, I think it's fair to say that Beckham also evolved and took care of himself well after a bit of a wobble. Getting thrown out of United might have been the best thing for him as a footballer, as he knew he had to prove himself on the pitch again. Sadly the same might be true for Rooney now . If he goes elsewhere he'll probably buckle down to prove a point and everyone will say United was mad to lose him.

Same Alonso that once played for Liverpool and now plays for Real? If so, I'd have to disagree. I've always viewed him as a 'water carrier'.

He's a good player. In the past few seasons Carrick has been superior to him, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone to was to look objectively at Carrick and Alonso over a longer period and decide that Carrick has always been superior despite Alonso's higher profile. At Liverpool and Real, Alonso has always benefitted from being part of a three man midfield alongside a water-carrier/defensive type like Mascherano and Khedira, plus an advanced attacking midfielder like Gerrard in his prime and Ozil today. In United's two-man midfield setup Carrick has always had a wider range of responsibilities.

Beckham WAS great... period... as far as I can tell, he never neglected his training, or his football responsibilities... he took all the commercializing very seriously, and worked it to its maximum... but only after football was done.

You look at his record, aside from staying at one club, like Giggs and Scholes... I'm not sure he could have achieved more.

Bang on.

He knew what his capabilities were and he worked very hard at honing them. He knew he wasn't a Zidane and never tried to be one. He had a wicked bad right foot, could drop a 60 yard pass onto a speck of dust and had a fantastic engine. Concentrate on your strengths and your weaknesses aren't highlighted.

What else helped was that he was such a dish. Many a night the Cap spent humping his life size cardboard cut out of Becks.

Robson gets overlooked in favour of Keane because he won less. He was 37 until he won his first league medal. He was also surrounded by average crap. He did everything that Keane could do - just as well - in fact he trained Keane (and Ince), but Robson gets it for me because he is the better man.

Did Keane really need to publish his book and the leg snapper against Alfy Haagland, his bitter feud against United and Taggart, every moment on TV he chooses to slag off united. He was a cunt on the pitch and is a cunt off it too.

That said Keane v, Robbo, jeez, it's like choosing between Kelly Brook and Keely Hazel's tits. Nothing in them - both ace, both legends, both great, both not as technically good as Schole.

Ince also just as good as Keane and Robbo - was faster then both of them and prob the best tackler too. Was also a tit and paid the price. Bit shit at penalties mind but Ince in euro 96 was a monster.

Also need to remember that Keane had Ince, Robbo, Scholes, Butt and Fletcher next to him. Robbo had fuck all really.

Otherwise, Souness, Viera and Gerrard all as good.

The only midfielder who could complete with Scholes on a technical level was Fabregas and maybe Alonso.

I think Robbo edged Keane. And no one has come close to Scholes, in terms of all round technical ability.

Never seen them play (except old footage) but Edwards and Charlton are thought of as greats.

Robson was more of a Gerrard type midfielder... full of drive and determination, great leader... but I can't think of another midfielder, quite like Keane, who had the lot... plus, was practically an assistant manager, on the pitch... as well as playing HIS own game, Keane was allways aware of what the rest of his team were doing and constantly managing them on their duties... and most importantly, they listened.

Becks coulda been a great..but chose to focus on building his brand, very successfully too...fair play to him though

Great player for us..

Scholes and Keane our 2 best midfielders ever??

Aye

Kanchelskis Keane ince giggs

Wasn't a bad one either

Would add overmars, petit, viera and parlour. 1997-98, they pulled back a 12 point lead on united and win league plus FA cup double. Didn't have longevity of some of Fergies early midfields but with bergkamp dropping in midfield, that was awesome.

Otherwise, viera, edu, pires, van bronkhorst of the 2001 invincibles is another legendary team plus makele, duff, robben, essien and dare I say it lampard of 2005, was class.
