I couldn't find a book thread, so here we go...

Just finished "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown, which a very readable history (for those worried it might be too heavy) of how Native Americans were royally fucked over by white Americans in their quest to populate North America (in a nutshell). This is easily one of the best books I've ever read, whilst also the most infuriating and saddening at the same time.

Quite simply, this book is fucking brilliant and I recommend that everybody reads it at some time in their life. It goes some way to explaining modern day American...

Biggest genocide in human history, the slaughter of the native americans. Some historians estimate over 100m dead. The extermination is almost impossile to comprehend.

Yet, strangely (or not), us Europeans don't get to hear about too often which is odd considering European Christians and Catholics were at the centre of the slaughter.

I blame John Wayne, and all the shit westerns that for some reasons are being shown on TV a lot recently on weekends.

Currently on The Strain, by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Fucked up take on the vampire myth. First of a trilogy, too. Had it over a year, but other books got in the way!

Reading Murukami's Norwegian Wood... Just started it.. But the ones before this were China Mieville's Perdido Street Station and The Scar... Interesting reads....

You need to read about how Argentines wiped out their black population. Read bits about it just before the last world cup. Am sure quite a number of you have wondered why they seem never to produce black footballers compared to all their other South American neighbours. No? Apologies then..

Two good works of fiction: Gerald Seymour's 'The Collaborator' and Mark Gimenez's 'Accused' were not bad. A few years back a Nigerian Author won the Orange Prize for literature. The book is titled 'Half of a Yellow Sun'. The only book I have ever read that I could never bring myself to ring a second time. It was harrowing for me personally.

Currently reading Foul! The secret world of FIFA - Andrew Jennings. Really good book. Sepp Blatter is a cunt of note.

Also just finished Heavy Liquid - Paul Pope. Ace graphic novel.

Currently reading G.Neville's book. Much better than that comic that Ryan Giggs penned a few years back. Very insightful on some matters Utd. Sir Alex is still a proper Don!!

The best line in the book? End of chapter 1: "United for life; the rest can go to hell"!!

Recently read a few books that I'd bought a year or so ago, only just got round to reading them.

Shantaram - fucking brilliant. It's one that's very difficult to put down.

The Book Thief - a very different book, set in WWII Germany. Slow to get going but then really grips you. Very well written.

A Fine Balance - nearly at the end. Story about 4 different people set in India from the period of Independence to the late 70's. A very good read, one that makes you put the book down from time to time to digest what you've just read.

Fucks sake, Cal. You can't even leave Giggs alone when you're on about a book he didn't even write. Can't wait to read your thoughts on Scholes's ghostwritten effort when it comes out, assuming you can read more than a page without vomiting all over it.

If you like that Scandanavian type stuff dread try Jo Nesbo - he's a cracking author and does a fine line in crime fiction.

Baloo, Yeah, I've read all of Nesbo's stuff, well, all those that have been translated into English. Very good, if a little filmic and Americanised in parts, though that might just be in the translation. The Redbreast and The Devil's Star are my personal favourites.

Cap, the Strain is ace. Chuck Hogan wrote it, but the ideas and scenarios have Del Toro's fingerprints all over them. Well worth a read, and the second, The Fall, is out in paperback soon. The website is pretty aces, too - http://www.thestraintrilogy.com/

Finished reading it. Neville's an amazing writer - it comes straight from his heart.
Am buying Scholes's book next, I'm not expecting much though.

Sir Ryan Giggs? No no no. Sir Paul Scholes say.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through Neville's book, enjoying it very much.

Finished Barry Eisler's The Detachment. Not his best, but it was good to see John Rain and Dox featuring again.

You know he didn't actually write it, right? Hire the right ghostwriter and anyone's life can sound interesting and from the heart. Even mine, and I am a fucking dullard.

Do you know that for a fact? I had made that assumption going in, but there are several places that make me wonder: little turns of phrase that one doesn't expect from a professional writer. I have begun to think the editor left them alone because they reflect the authentic voice of Gary Neville, if you will.

Yeah, Gary knows enough English to write right? I think he's written it, it wasn't like the standard of English was great etc. Ed's is better.

I read somewhere about how a lot of socalled biographies come about... Footballers meet with their publishers, talk for about 3 or 4 hours into a microphone, then some cunt types it up and fleshes it out

That's not writing a book

It would just be easier to do a really long, in depth interview, but then the player, the publisher etc. wouldn't receive any royalties
