Not at all. Milner wouldn't be so much "in the hole" as providing movement and covering in the midfield, being generally more advanced than Scholes and Carrick would be. You could have Rooney "up top" if you want, but I think the best way to think about it would be having Young, Rooney, and Welbeck being very mobile up front, rather the way we had Rooney, Ronaldo, and Tevez interchanging a few seasons back. Now of course Rooney, Young, and Welbeck is not as strong a triumvirate as Roo-Ronaldo-ThePrickTevez, but it's not bad. All three players are fast, pretty intelligent, and good at interplay, and know each other well from playing together at United. I'd be open to considering putting the likes of Sturridge/Wilcott/Ox in there instead. Baines/Cole and Richards would provide the real width down the flanks. Then you have a really solid midfield with Scholes, Carrick, and Milner/Parker. Basically, as long as the lads up front can get into a good position, Scholesy and Carrick will get the fucking ball to them.
International football isn't brain surgery, but you have to be better than completely brainless. A midfield set-up without either Scholes or Carrick is simply a waste of time for England, as has been proven time and time again. Which is why you get the likes of Alonso shaking their heads in bewilderment when they see a set-up with Lamps and Gerrard. You don't have to choose between "playing like Barca" and "having a go". It's ridiculous to say "oh we can't be as good as Barca, so let's not bother having any sort of quality passer in midfield at all".
Basically, I'm suggesting that England try putting together a logical team of 11 players for a chance, instead of trying to cram as many famous names into the 11 as possible. Greece won the Euro not so long ago, compared to the Greek players the likes of Carrick and Milner are fucking superstars.
