The violence is wrong for sure, but this isn't as cut and dried as the press would have you think.
The new Tory "reforms" and "cuts", etc are hitting the youth of this country hard... people are losing their jobs wholesale, and there is a very aggreesive welfare crackdown... the youth will take the brunt of that... "find a job, or lose your benefits"... there's no fuckin jobs to find but, the established understanding is, that youth are a hardy lot, so they can take a bit of hardship... fuck 'em...
Yeah, this is "mindless violence"... but not everyone has a colledge education... this is just rage coming out from people who've been given no other way to express themselves,.

Parts of London are just fucking rough. They've been like that since the late 70's/early 80's.
I used to live near Brixton and there were plenty of instances of disorder in the area where I lived. Local superstores being robbed, shootings, stabbings, and so on. I swear, every day when I came home from work, I could guarantee that I'd hear a police siren go off.
To the rest of the country, the shit going on in London is something extraordinary, but it's not really surprising to me.
Edit - Apparently there are riots going on in Brixton as well.

The tory establishment do not give flying fart about anyone but their eton mates and ofcourse big businesses. The cuts are biting hard. My wife works in the Benefits office and she has been banging on about how hard it is at work as they are so short staffed because ALL the contract staff they had were sent away. Which means that with all the cuts, there are more people on benefits, but the benefits have also being cut, and charities shut down. In the meantime, small businesses are being taxed to death. Add that to the new stories of how the politicians and the Police have been exposed to be corrupt by the phone hacking/News international scandals and it was only a matter of time before deep resentments came to the fore.
The Police we all know can be deeply horrible lot. The way that that Brazillian was killed and they tried to blame him with planted stories in the press have not been forgotten and now another man gets killed. Recipe for disaster. There was a peaceful march to the station in North London but the Police refused to come and speak to the people for FOUR hours. So they decided to get attention in another way. Not right. But these things happen. I have no idea why this govt with all the cuts never thought that some day an explosion was going to happen.
No one in a job currently does not feel over worked as a result of the incredibly speedy cuts. Knobby, it is not all about "hoodied cunts" who "want to fuck about". People are frustrated.

The Tories came in knowing the economy was in trouble... they could have spread out the pain, but instead, they figure if they squeeze hard enough now, then they can ease up, just in time for the next election.
The country is suffering right now, so that they can barter for another term later... and then will come another squeeze...

I find myself in the strange position of agreeing with Cal on this. Sheesh, violence and disorder go on everywhere, all the time. London doesn't have the monopoly on it. Stockwell doesn't represent the whole of London. This situation is fucked. To try to suggest it is the norm for London, then to slyly blame it on Labour un 2007 is ridiculous, frankly.

I am not blaming the labour government. I am rejecting the idea that this is some sort of political uprising. My point is that parts of London are very rough and perhaps more susceptible to these scenes. I am not defending the governments cuts at all. This is not what all this is about.
