I'm gonna take the blind optimist route and assume that Scholes is being kept on another year to act as a mentor to some of the younger lads coming through. Hell, I need some hope to cling onto!

How old is he now?... 36?

Giggs and Scholes have 1/2 a good season in them each. They should count as 1 player in terms of squad depth at CM. You could say the same about Anderson and Cleverley. If Fletcher doesn't return it leaves us with 3 CMs (Carrick counts as a whole player).

I ask myself many times what kind of press Paul Scholes will be getting if he did not carry a British Passport.
I will shout it to the roof tops that I understand completely the reasons our manager brought him back last season. However, this one now is foolishness. If we have to mentor any young midfielders Michael Carrick has the medals and experience to do such from next season on..

To be fair Cal, you've had some kind of irrational grudge against Scholes for years now, even going back to when he was on top of his game, and plus you've publicly stated that we should go for Stewart Downing, even after the appalling season he's just had for the Bindippers, so with all due respect, your opinion doesn't really hold much value!

If Scholes is there to act as a mentor to the younger players, surely he can just do that as a member of the coaching staff like he was prior to being exhumed? The reason he was brought back was to counter injuries, because the gimps wouldn't put their hands in their pockets...sorry, because there was no value in the market. Therefore, for him to be re-signed again before the season's even started and all players should be back fit for August, just means in my mind that it's going to be another frugal summer...

I assumed that he was already signed up for next season. How could we not sign him on for another season giving how well he played? I've no problem at all with Scholesy being in the squad to be used judiciously -- he's still in the top five players in the world at the moment in terms of skill and intelligence. My problem is that we seem to be using him as a first-choice, regular starter despite his age, because we're not investing in the team.

To be fair though, "Thir's nae value" in most of Cal's opinions anyway

I will still state my admiration for Downing. If you people want to use stats to judge a footballer only please go right ahead. Don't try and drag me along. When a wingers sends in 10 brilliant crosses and they are not finished into goals by the forwards why should the winger get the blame. Just last saturday in Norway, Downing played in one absolute peach of a ball that the lemon that is Carroll still managed to miss. However, it will be down that he had no assist. He made many like that this season for Liverpool and were missed by the supposed forwards yet we will be talking stats.
If there was one other left sided player in the PL that will be as athletic and as quick as he is to give us the balance that we lack when Evra is off form and Giggs is not playing then fine. We seem to have none coming through the ranks. Try and look at football holistically people.
Scholes is spent and over the hill. Has been for at least four seasons now. You don't think so. Great. This is an internet forum and frankly only deluded people care if those on the forum consider their views important.

He was good as a stop-gap measure last season to help with injuries (to be fair to Fergie, January wasn't the time to buy the players we need, as most will still have been playing in the CL or would be cup-tied in the Europa, etc.), but we absolutely should not be looking at him as a squad player this year.

you cant be serious!!!! Im not gonna get into a list of players but come on, that is absurd.
that's the sort of shit that united fans come out with and then they wonder why they are the most hated in the world.ffs, top five in the world! scholes can't even play three games in a row.

To be fair... Bernie said, "top five for skill and intelligence."
And for vision, and range of passing, there aren't many better... even now that he's getting liver spots.
But that's only of use when we've got the ball... without it, he's almost useless.

fair point Alf.
it's just so incredibly frustrating with Fergie living in the past with his constant bumming up of scholes and giggs.
with Fletcher having arse problems is there anyone credible in our midfield who can actually tackle, intercept, cover ground, close down players and a EPL level of fitness.
Kawagasaaywywyway will I'm sure be very good but what about all the dirty work of midfield?
I know I bang on about it but we need to get the fucking ball - and if we haven't got it, we need to get it back.
old timer scholes, carrick and cleverly is a shit offering if you look at what we need for 8 months of the year.
(i refuse to count Anderson as a serious midfield proposition.)

I stand by my statement. Name five better passers playing today. Do you people even see the fucking passes Scholes makes nonchalantly? I think it's because it's his bread and butter to ping balls the length of the pitch, right onto the onrushing attacker's toe, that people take Scholes' almost peerless skill for granted. Age is clearly taking its toll, but it hasn't much affected his raw skills yet -- except his close control under pressure, since his declining athleticism means he doesn't quite keep the ball away from harrassers like a Harlem Globetrotter anymore. BUt given the way he played in the second half of this season and his professionalism, it's a no brainer to sign him up again. Obviously he's not the man we should be relying on in the first 11, I said that in my original post, but there's plenty of games we play in the course of the season where Scholesy is still able to go into cruise control and run the game.

We should ditch Anderson. I doubt Fletcher will be able to come back, not reliably and not at the level he was playing a couple of seasons ago before his illness set in. The good news is that Cleverly genuinely did look very useful at the beginning of last season, so if he stays fit he will be a big boost. I don't think we need to total brute like De Jong or Tiote, but someone who is basically a classier Fletcher would be ideal. Vidal at Juventus went fairly cheap last summer, would have been ideal for us. Martinez and Strootman seem like they are that kind of player, maybe M'Vila too. We should have offered De Rossi a massive salary before he resigned for Roma in January, since he would have been available for free this summer.

Anderson was at least as good as Cleverley at the start of last season. Anderson is only one year older than Cleverley. Both players have had their development stunted by persistent injuries. I don't see why one should be seen as some great hope for the future and the other as trash to be thrown out.
