   Anyway, geek friends of mine tell me that Unix creator Dennis Ritchie is dead, and that he was as important as Jobs if not more so

   But nobody gives a fuck because he didn't try and skilfully craft a public profile for himself, nor sue 19 year olds, nor ban gay things, nor create a cute little purple mp3 player that I love soooo much because its mine and its purple and that expresses my personality because I'm a virgo and I'm complicated blah blah blah

   Sorry to hear about Dennis. Can't believe that I, a long-time user of SUN computers at work, did not know of Ritchie apart from his work on the C programming language. Definitely a pioneer worth honoring.

   Same as, all my computer science mates used to bang on about unix and C++ and I hear that he was genuinely a pioneer.

   Sid - conceptually I don't anything wrong with creating a brand or making a product desireable. If some Ke$ha worshipping teenage school girl feels better about showing off her new i-bollock then fair fucks to that.

   Its no different to Nike, Aston Martin or Coke who have monumental marketing budgets and strategies. The reason maybe people focus more on Jobs is because he is identifiable more than any individual with his company and product owing to its huge consumption.

   If Mark Zuckerburg were to die tomorrow you get a similar reaction.

   Jobs was in a unique catagory of being a businessman who was more famous than some popstars. I don't know whether that is right or wrong and I don't really care but he did create something of incredible value and withat comes a lot of shit. It was a great forumula and unique but by no means perfect for all.

    So what if he worked 8 year olds 60 hours a week with no breaks no education and kept them like fucking cattle on a farm... At least they had jobs! And how do they repay us? By bloody hanging themselves! So much for gratitude!

    And don't get me on about those bloody negros on farms... Talk about ungrateful... They had a job for life, no education, a shed in which they were fed and bred like cattle, no rights whatsoever, were whipped & beaten often 'til death... And what did they do?     Don't know if its worth its own topic, but seeing China has been used so much in this thread it kind of justifies a little what Ron has been saying.... And when you read more into it and the reasons why people didn't get involved...their government needs bringing down

    Mate... a couple years back, I was on my way to pick up the missus from work, when I noticed a man lying on the side walk... my first instinct, he was drunk and passed out... but as I was passing, I noticed the brick work, right beside him was damaged... in just seconds, all this information registered in my head, about maybe he's not drunk, maybe he was hit by a car, maybe I shouldn't be such a cunt, and get out and see...

    So I did... I pulled over, went over and tried to rouse him... "you OK Mate?"... no response... it was a very busy road and all this traffic was just driving past, and no more than 30 yards away, a woman waiting at a bus stop.

    I yelled at her... "didn't you see this?"... she just shrugged, and I shouted at her... "call a fuckin ambulance"... there was more that I said under my breath... I couldn't fuckin believe it.

    It was winter, and bitter cold... I ran up to the house... knocked, and this bloke open the door... I said... "there's a man down in front of your house, don't know what's what, but could you spare a blanket?"... you should have seen his face... you'd think I'd just asked him if he'd mind if I took a dump in his living room...

    I made a bit of a fuss, and he grudgingly gave some old ratty, thing... it was better than nowt, and the ambulance arrived a few minutes later...

    It's not just China Mate... it's people...
