   It's sad, I know, but I've found myself fantasising about who we might buy in the summer. Go on, admit it, you do it too. This seems like it will be a relatively big summer for us, since there will be quite a few old and crocked leaving, and some deadweight sold. In the interests of making the exercise somewhat worthwhile, I'm going to assume a vaguely realistic max net spend of about £35M.

   Gibson 2 million
   Diouf 4
   Obertan 1
   Brown 2
   Kuszcak 4
   Carrick 7
   Evra 20 (think is likely, I don't want it to happen)
   Neville 0
   Hargreaves 0
   Owen 0

   Henderson 20 (I get the feeling this is a done deal)
   Steklenberg 15 (this seems quite likely too)
   Coentrao 25 (I'd love this, I thought he was ace at the WC)

   Which comes out to £35M net.

   The problems I have with this are that we still look light on the left wing and right back positions, and is our central midfield noticeably improved with Henderson and a young defensive midfielder like M'Vila? Scholes might retire too. Perhaps we might get more than I estimated for the likes of Carrick, Scrabble, and Brown, and we'd get good money for Welbeck. So we could buy a decent midfielder in that case, but would be light in strikers with just Berb, Hernandez, and Rooney?

   Whilst I wouldn't be surprised by any of those sales, I think the sheer number is unrealistic. I agree that this summer is going to see a hell of a revamp though. My view is:

   OUT:
   Gibson 4 - played himself out of a new contract in recent weeks. Prob end up at Sunderland
   Diouf 6 - NUFC
   Obertan - given more time to prove himself
   Brown - seems likely to go but I'd hold him to him given so many other experienced players are leaving
   Kuszcak 4 - maybe back to West Brom
   Carrick - na, think he'll be given a new contract
   Bebe - loaned
   Evra - big new contract
   VDS - retire
   Neville - retire
   Hargreaves - possible pay to play deal elsewhere, most likely retire
   Owen - Everton/Villa
   TOTAL 14M - but big savings in wages (VDS, Neville, Hargo). 8 players out in total.

   IN
   Henderson/Rodwell/Marchisio/Martinez 20 - young up an coming midfield talent seems a certainty
   Alexis Sanchez 18 - would prefer a left footer winger/attacking mid, but no obvious targets
   De Gea 15 - although Adler also a good gettable option
   M'Vila 15 - looked good in the England friendly, Arsenal will prob also be after him too
   Giggs and Scholes - new one-year deals
   Pogba 0
   Morrison 0
   De Laet 0 - depends if Brown is sold
   Cleverly 0
   Welbeck 0
   Macheda 0
   TOTAL 68M
   NETSPEND OF 54M. High net spend, but we do have some important players leaving this summer.

   I'm ignoring Rooney here, but if his shite form contniues he may well be out in the summer too.

   I like Sanchez a lot too, but I'd love a left-footed Sanchez. Does no one else think that one of Welbeck and Macheda will be sold?

   I can see United cashing in on Macheda now that they know that they have 2 very good young strikers in Welbeck and Hernandez. I'd say its in the balance, depends on the offer they get. If he goes then I think Owen might get another 1 year contract as cover and to mentor Welbeck/Hernandez.

   The fear with Macheda is that he'll 'do a Rossi'. I think we'll keep him another year in the hope he clicks into life.

   I think Welbeck has already proven that he has the quality to succeed at United. With Owen out of the way, I think he'll get quite a few opportunities next year. He may be played out on the left as well as up front. Always good to have mancunians in the squad - hopefully an example to Ravel Morrison too.

   This summer, I think a lot could depend on if Spurs finish 4th. If they don't then United (and other big clubs) will surely bid for Bale, Modric or VDV.

   I'd bite their hands off for Bale or Modric, but I don't see us getting Bale in particular, as either Barca or Real will probably offer crazy money. Or the Chavs or Bitters for that matter.

    Rooney's not going to be sold, that's nonsense. I'd be ok with letting Evra go if we got enough money to buy Coentrao as a replacement, but I don't think that's going to happen either, we'll just pay him more.

    I want Sanchez and a lefty, maybe Hazard?

    Welbeck and Cleverley have played well this season on loan so will have a chance at United next season without doubt. Cleverley in for Gibson, Welbeck in for Macheda or Owen. De Laet could be sold or be a squad player a la 2010/11 Fabio. With Nev gone we are down to 9 senior defenders.

    We're being linked to Newcastle's Tiote. Now that's a transfer I could get behind. Against Arsenal he had about 5 interceptions and 5 tackles, and only a small amount of misplaced passes. Basically he's a defensive player who can still hold possession and distribute well -- a good improvement on what we currently have I'd say.

    Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is out to land an unspecified player this summer.

    The Old Master has revealed he made a move in the January transfer window that ultimately did not come off.

    Whilst not specifying who his target was - or what position they occupy on the field - the United boss is determined to finally land his man in the summer.

    Ferguson, who has been linked with signing a new keeper due to Edwin van der Sar'simpending retirement, told United Review: "Billionaire owners have introduced a new world that is turning football on its head.

    "For our part, we cannot afford to sit in an ivory tower. We have to face the challenge.

    "It is a healthy competition and it goes without saying that we will not shirk it and I don't think we are doing so.

    "Although I let the transfer window shut without signing a new player, that is because we did our homework some time ago and didn't have to rush into any emergency buying.

    "We had an interest in one player, and I thought we had a chance of bringing him in, but the other parties involved weren't ready and so we have put it away until the summer.

    I've not been that impressed with Henderson that I think we should be spending £20 million odd for him. He's not that good.

    I spoke to a Sunderland fan at work who doesn't get all the hype either. For that sort of money they'd snap our hands off.

    For that sort of money, I'm sure there are far better players out there.

    After seeing this week's international games:

    IN (30 mill)

    Stekelenburg - 10 mill
    Ninis - 8.5 mill (his release clause is for this much)
    Eriksen - 11.5 mill

    For me Eriksen is a must have. His balance, vision and ball skills are far in advance of any young English player of similar age (Rodwell, Henderson, Wilshere) at the moment. Ninis can play attacking midfield or wing. Skekelenberg would be as close to a like for like replacement for VDS, with Lindegaard as a solid back up.

    It's someone we've been scouting for a while who wants to come to United, who comands a decent transfer fee, but his club didn't want to sell in January.

    My guess would be Alexis Sanchez.
