Ryan Giggs will be Knighted in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list if the signatories of a new petition are heard by the Palace ahead of the 1 January 2010 announcement. SirRyanGiggs.com asks that Giggs, “the most decorated player in English footballing history having served the full length of his career demonstrating loyalty to his club,” now be considered for Knighthood.

Giggs, who has appeared more than eight hundred times for the club, won the PFA Footballer of the Year title last year. He has also been in superb form this season, with two goals and five assists in all competitions. The petitioners note Giggs’ loyalty, that he has never been sent off in a United shirt, while asking the Crown to show him the sword!

do you have to lobby the queen for knighthoods these days?

The question isn’t should Giggs be knighted. It’s simply WHEN he should be knighted. Now, while he still may have a year or two of top class football left to play, or once he’s decided to call it a day.

I personally think it can wait till he retires from the game. Not because he doesn’t deserve it now, but more because it will just be something of a distraction. Something that will take focus off his football and on his personality.

The man has never been about awards, or recognition. Lets Giggs be Giggs and win trophies for United. Having said that, how awesome would it be to have the name “Sir Ryan Giggs” on the team sheet? 😀

I think I agree. It’s only a matter of time for him, and I’d rather he get the honour after his retirement.

I think its about time this great man is knighted. I dont think that doing it now will destruct a person like Giggs, he has handled well his recent PFA award, infact, the award seem to have motivated him to give more this season. I think it would be great to have a Sir Ryan Giggs on our team sheet…Arise Sir Ryan Giggs
