Reds unveil kids, lose sight of value

Manchester United officially unveiled summer signings Javier Hernández, Bébé and Chris Smalling at an Old Trafford press conference today, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson claiming that nobody in the market is better than now available in his squad. The trio, signed for around £25 million atage 20-22, represent the club’s future said Ferguson.

Ferguson, who is effectively under orders from senior management to invest in youth and not established players who have no resale value, said that bringing players to the club from a young age creates loyalty.

“We’ve seen with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, and later O’Shea, Fletcher and Wes Brown that young players develop and have a good loyalty towards you, they appreciate the education you give them as coaches,” argues Ferguson.

Those of a more cynical nature might argue that Cristiano Ronaldo’s £80 million transfer to Real Madrid provides the true template for United’s current transfer policy.

Perhaps more controversially Ferguson, who has repeatedly declared that there is no value in the transfer market on the day German midfielder Mesut Özil signed for Real Madrid in a £12.4 million deal, said that nobody that he had seen could offer a “quantum leap” improvement in United’s side this season.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernández

Of those players already brought to the club, 22-year-old Chicharito has already become a fans’ favourite after bright performances in pre-season games against an MLS All Star XI, former club Chivas Guadalajara, the Airtricity League XI and Chelsea in the Community Shield. The striker signed for around £7 million, which United announced in April. He has scored 10 goals in 17 internationals for Mexico.

“It’s like a dream. I am living the dream that I’ve had since I was 10 years old,” said Chicharito, who said his home début for the club was wonderful.

“I’ve always seen these players like Scholes and I want to be like them. I want to grow as a human and a player and the most important thing is I want to win championships.”

Tiago Manuel “Bébé” Dias Correi

Meanwhile, surprise signing Bébé, aged 20, joins from Vitória de for €9 million – £7.4 million – after United’s former assistant manager Carlos Quieroz recommended the winger-cum-forward. The player is yet to play at any level above the Portuguese third division, although Guimarães claims that Real Madrid was also among four clubs bidding for the winger who was available on a free transfer less than two months ago.

Indeed, Ferguson admitted that he is yet to see anything of Bébé, having signed a player before watching him play, even on video, for the first time in 24 years as United’s manager. “Sometimes you have to go on instinct,” and the judgement of United’s scouting department, Ferguson said.

Bébé’s rise to the top of world football took the football world by surprise in the past week but it’s an opportunity that the player intends to capitalise on.

“I feel very good. It’s an opportunity that has been given to me and I must grab it,” said the winger, now sporting short hair after Ferguson apparently ordered the player to remove the locks he wore just last week.

“The strong Portuguese links here were a big thing for me. Ronaldo played here and he became a great player. Also, Nani and Anderson are here and I want to be like them and work hard to become a good player.”

Chris “Appalling” Smalling

United announced a £10 million deal, rising to £12 million, for former-Fulham central defender Smalling, 20, in January. The 6’5″ defender has the raw talent, with pre-season games demonstrating his pace, passing ability and physique. However, the inexperienced defender’s form has dipped markedly since United announced the move last winter, although England Under-21s selected the player last week.

“They gave me my chance and a lot of support,” said Smalling of his time at Fulham who discovered the giant defender playing non-league football less than three years ago.

The relative value of each signing is, of course, dependant on their success or failure at the club but there are no guarantees. After all, younger players such as Giuseppe Rossi, Gerrard Piqué and Diego Forlan failed to make the grade at United before establishing themselves elsewhere.

Indeed, it is tempting to ponder exactly what value Ferguson is really looking for?

Özil, his compatriot Sami Khedira and the brilliant Dutchman Wes Sneijder each cost their clubs about the same fee as Smalling will eventually draw from United’s coffers. UEFA Club Player of the Year shortlisted Diego Milito was available on a free transfer last summer.

Value indeed.

Look if you’re so p**sed off with the set up at OT and Fergie’s policy, why don’t you slip off to Gigg Lane with the other whingers and support FCU ?

And take your friggin Norwich colours with youz.

Fergie’s prog notes last nite are bang on the button to a lot of us.

I’ll wager that Özil washes whiter and not much else in long-term.

@Tired Red – Here you go again – somebody doesn’t agree with you its “fuck off and support another team.” How about instead you going fuck off and join the other Glazer flag waving sycophants over a ManUtd.com? Thanks.

        Hey Ed,
from the outside you have to realise that your posts have become very biased. It’s kind of like what has happened at Gizmodo, they’ve gone from Apple evangelists to Apple haters.

I know you don’t hate Man U, and likewise i don’t expect you to look the other way regarding the Glazers, but there must be a way to report on events without your clear agenda shining through.

I want new, young players so i like these signing, although I wish we had signed them with more time to bed in before the Giggs, Scholes & Neville retire.

Oh and I like the way you responded to @tired Red with the same childish nonsense instead of giving him a reasoned response. But hey, it’s your website.

        • says

@Day – it’s not the BBC, why shouldn’t I express my opinions? And I do almost always offer a reasoned argument (there’s 800 words of it above by the way) but I’m sick, utterly sick, of flag waving Glazer lovers telling me who I should support. I support United and if that’s the best Glazer fans have got (almost always it is) then they’re much better offer reading the club’s PR spin. I don’t believe that being a supporter involves burring my head in the sand to what’s going on at the club and I don’t believe Ferguson is either absolved from blame nor telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but either.

i’m on the same pg. i struggle to understand why we did not move for ozil when CM (assuming scholes won’t play 2x a week) is still screaming for a creative, goal scoring mid fldr. great show against magpies, but face it – our mid fld really could’ve used the ‘value’ addition to truly compete with the top sides of europe

For the record – and just for those without a sense of humour as I’m sure there are plenty – the reference to Smalling as “appalling” is a joke based on the other two having nicknames. Joke. Geddit. Please don’t post if your point is about that.

I like how the views and opinions differ from fans and seem to constantly change, Firstly there were the views that the club were broke and that this was all the glazers fault and we would struggle to compete. Now the fact that the club have spent close to £25m the majority of fans still seem unhappy because the manager hasn’t spent it on the right players. How many so called fans have written Bebe off before they’ve even seen him kick a ball, how many have called Smalling a flop and a waste of money despite the fact he has very little experience in football never mind in the top flight. Why are so many fans and pundits quick to judge a player when they know so little about them?. My advice is either get behind the team and support them or f*** off and support some other club because your views and half hearted support is not needed!!

            @ed
it is true that likes of ozil, khedira, sneijder were available for similar fees to the ones we have paid for the above 3.i like you am not happy with fergie’s no value for money remarks but i think the point here is that all these quality players who are available for relatively cheap fees do not want to play in the premiere leauge as 1)its hardest league to play in 2)awful english weather 3)crazy salary the likes of real and barca are willing to pay
so i think fergie can only sign those players from overseas for relatively cheap fees who are not really proven stars.in last few years the only players whom we have bought which were proven quality are rooney, rio and berba(well he is class that you can’t deny)and the only reason they signed for us was bcoz they were already playing in the same league.only quality players who won’t mind playing in the premiere league are the ones who only care about the cash they are paid and thus will end up at city or chelsea as the likes of utd and arsenal will never pay anyone salariea like 150000 a week. so i think it is going to be like this.we will keep on signing unproven talents and hope at least a few turn out to be ronaldo’s.

There is one major “however” to all this though.

If Ferguson wins with these players.

It’s all fine and good to criticise him for siding with the Glazers over the fans… I still don’t understand it myself… but when it comes down to “on the pitch” matters, all that really counts is whether or not we win the title, proving he was right all along.

And let’s face it, it wouldn’t be the first time.

    • Tired Red says

Yeh. But when Ciddy spend 125 million on overrated expensive whims and then still win f**k all, you nobheads all howl that we are Glazer crazy not spending ‘owt.

Or r u trying to tell me that this is further evidence of Fergie-Glazer spin?

  8. John Smith says

Oezil’s preference was to join Madrid. Do you think if we offered €18m, he’d have changed his mind? It was Oezil’s choice and we knew what he wanted, so what was the point of bidding? No-one else bid.

As for our three signings, it’s great that we are buying younger players. It’s what United is all about.

    • Tired Red says

      No it weren’t.

“Özil, his compatriot Sami Khedira and the brilliant Dutchman Wes Sneijder each cost their clubs about the same fee as Smalling will eventually draw from United’s coffers”

Ozil would have asked for much more at United. Remember England’s tax laws? Might have been one of the reasons, i guess.

  10. NIRed Devil says

I disagree: Yes Ozil’s fee was value but he always wanted to go to Spain if the comments made today by his father are anything to go by so whether United offered terms or agreed a price with his current club is a moot point as his heart was always elsewhere.

As fans we automatically assume that a decision is made on footballing reasons alone but unfortunately not. Life style choices family considerations etc all come into play. If it were for pure footballing reasons alone Ozil would have signed for us because of the reputation we have for developing young players as opposed to Real Madrid who tend to buy the ready made article but yet he chose Madrid. Only time will tell if he made the right choice but it may be that over that same period of time a Cleverley or a Bebe will have us talking about Ozil in the same way we compare Ronaldo and Ronaldinho or Shearer and Cantona.

    Believe!

Fergie chatting more shit about the youth http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/17/alex-ferguson-transer-market-spending

“There will be a time when we have to buy a more mature player,” Ferguson said. “At the moment, this is a young players club. But they will grow old too. In 10 years’ time, we will be looking to replace them. Hopefully they are there in 10 years’ time. That is the object in terms of having a long-term vision for the club.”

What fucking planet is he living on? LKHF

United’s transfer strategy has definitely changed in the last couple of years. The current emphasis on cheap unproven youth (not experience top quality proven youth like Gourcuff, Ozil etc.) has the Glazers’ stamp all over it. They’ve had a word with Fergie, I’m convinced, and consequently the direction of the club has changed drastically.

    • Tired Red says

      Great. That’s one problem solved.

Sidders has the footballing expertise to take over from Fergie, when he retires, and steer us to another era of glory.

@ed- I have nothing against people giving a valid opinion or constructive view but when so called fans instantly slag off a new player when all at times they’ve got to go on is a youtube video I find it really annoying. I’m also well aware of how much the club have spent and recoup’d but as many fans don’t look at how much the club recoup rather then what they spend hence the £25m on new players signed. @captainhormone, The funny thing is your comment makes you sound like the type of person who says it’s crazy but if the player turns out to be fantastic you will say what an inspired signing!. Why can’t fans just reserve judgement and wait to see how players progress? I mean fans were saying who is Hernandez and why have we signed him?,now everyones banging on about how he’s somehow gona be the next Ronaldo! give me a ******* break!!

    • says

@Jon – so it’s ok to support United now is it? Well as long as somebody a) agrees with you or is b) positive and dare not question! To question the club’s policy has nothing to do with supporting the team on the pitch. I’ve been going to Old Trafford for 25 years but something still stinks about United’s transfer policy at the moment and I don’t see why I can’t say that.

  14. Don Pablo says

I usually side with you with the whole Anti-Glazer issue and the apparent lack of signings but the gloom on this article borders on the absurd. Ffs we just presented three players who are now United players who we should now back regardless of whatever feelings we have against Fergie/Glazers policy. There should be some excitment. Instead of focusing on who we should have bought blah blah we should look at who we have and move on. I’m sure if we hadn’t bought Bebe and he went on to shine at Madrid, you’d be here 2-3 years from now complaining how we didin’t sign him when he was available for £7m. Or Hernandez for the same value. We should support the players and see how they turn out before resorting to such pessimism.

      • says

@Tired Red – False logic. “Fergie’s the greatest manager ever so if he says the Glazers are great and suddenly decides he’s only interested in value how can he be wrong?” Fergie’s a politician who is going along with what he has to right now. Do you think he’d be buying kids if he had a choice? No. Not as if he wasn’t happy to spend big on players in the past in case you’ve forgotten.

        • Tired Red says

          Like in ’96 I suppose.

I am sure Fergie’s biggest regret is that he didn’t have so many kids to win nowt then.

  17. Stephen Morris says

My simple hope is that Fergie is saving all his pennies so that we can buy Rodwell next summer. The reality is that Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes and Cleverley will have to do a lot of work in the middle of the park this year. Not even going to count Gibson as he is total pish.

  18. says

It does seem like madness for Fergie to sign a player when he hasn’t even seen videos of him play. Has SAF ever adopted such a policy towards signing a player in the past? I struggle to think of an example.

Whether you support it or not there is clearly a dramatic change in transfer policy for United and it would seem it can only stem from the financial situation the club finds itself in.

I would love it if all these young players go on to be world beaters but there is a long list of foreign bought youngsters signed by Fergie who never made the grade. At least in the past the squad was able to be supplemented by the signing of more established players along with the younger rawer talent but I fear this is well and truly over.

  21. Clayton Beardsmore says

You’ve let your anti-Glazer stance cloud your entire view of the club and the manager, and it makes for increasingly boring, pessimistic and agenda-driven reporting. Nothing gets published on this site without a dig at Fergie and the Glazers.

Ozil and Khedira would have been nice, but they went to Spain. Get over it. Sneijder? Yeah, he’d have been nice too, but wanted a move to Inter and still wants to stay there now. And Milito wasn’t free, he went as part of a cash + player deal with Genoa.

You seem to have a fantasy wishlist of players you’ve seen and want us to buy, and if Fergie signs someone outside of this list you get uppity and blame it on the Glazers. The market DOESN’T have value at the moment. Just look at the idiotic sums splashed by City on Milner, Balotelli and co. Barcelona unable to pay their players’ wages because they spent so large.

If Fergie had signed Solskjaer back when this site existed, you’d be kicking up a fuss and demanding to know why we hadn’t bought Stan Collymore or Dean Holdsworth.

Just relax, stop viewing the club with such disdain and trust the judgment of the manager and his scouting network.

    • says

@Clayton Beardsmore – what fantasy list of players has been printed on this website? None. Happy for you to put a different view but basing your argument on false reporting of my opinions weakens your position completely.

I’m sure lots of other clubs were saying the market didn’t have value when United spent £30m on Rio, Veron, Rooney and so on. But in truth there’s value everywhere – Ozil, Khadeira, Sneijder, Milito, Canales, Cole… I can go on. That’s not a list of player I wanted, its proof there’s value. City aren’t getting value but that’s clearly not the point. What there isn’t is funds to build a squad and compete. My bet – when Neville, Giggs, Scholes, van der Sar, and Hargreaves leave next summer we’ll still not invest then either.

TBH transfer fees were never the issue on any of those, the main problem was the wages. Madrid, City and Liverpool were prepared to splash out on a weekly basis, United were not.

In a way it is good to see United setting the example by not spending silly money, but still without the Glazers United would actually generate the money to be able to spend big. Other clubs are simply overusing their overdraft or have some billionaire to bail them out.

Smalling is a big young lad with obvious potential, and Wenger was interested as well… and let’s not forget our premature opinions of both Vidic and Evra… both proved to be great signings eventually.

And Bebe… was supposedly signed on the recommendation of Carlos… who Fergie just gave a character reference for in court, who is still very good friends with Fergie… surely there must be something to him. Another big strong, athletic, young lad…

Even if their signings are the result of the Glazers telling Ferguson to shop on the cheap… I don’t believe for one second that Ferguson would buy complete nobodies, without some suspician of potential… and I also don’t believe the Glazers would sanction money spent so foolishy.

Fuck me… let’s give them an honest chance, before we label them shite.

Great article United Rant but I think the whole “SAF can’t see the value in Sneijder, Milito, etc” is a bit old.

It was last season and we can’t buy everyone. On the same logic Kaka, Xavi, etc would have been great value years ago.

he doesn’t have a crystal ball and signings like Vidic, Ronaldo, Evra, and the Da Silvas (maybe a bit soon to call) should make you trust his methods a little more.

    • says

@OllieWillieFC – my point has never been we should sign all these players, my point is there’s value everywhere, even for big name established players. It’s a fallacy that’s used to mask the financial reality at this club and it’s pissing me off that Sir Alex, greatest manager ever, is out there lying to the fans on an almost daily basis. What’s worse, some people actually fall for it. Right now we’re signing kids only because the Glazers want to be able to sell them on. You mentioned two Vidic and Evra who were already established internationals.

  52. 50ftdubdemon says

think smallings fee was inflated by fact that hes homegrown. same thing happened to the dippers with glen johnson.

as for value weve got bebe AND hernandez for roughly same price as ozil.. not to mention that their combined wages wont come close to what ozil was wanting.

  56. says

One point some seem to forget here no Player or Manager is bigger than the club, I support Manchester United which was there before Sir Alex Ferguson came and will be there after he came.

Some people need to accept that in the present climate where fans are divided as to what is better for the club that there will be opinions poles apart in how the manager should behave. Some will support what happens regardless others will be vehemently against respect and accept the view of the other person and the world will be a better place but don’t call somebody less of a supporter because they don’t accept your views.

Once upon a time Sir Matt Busby was considered the greatest Manager of all time at Manchester United, then along came Alex Ferguson who took the club to even greater heights and at some point in time probably later than sooner even the achievements of Alex Ferguson will be eclipsed by another Manager.

At the end of the day we are supporters of Manchester United Football Club !

  57. Fuego says

It’s right that we have to support the club, not Fergie or particular players, but do you really think you know everything better than him? It makes me wonder why you are so sure Sneijder, Özil, Villa etc would all fit in the team so well and have their best performances here. And also why you say those 3 players have no value. I just don’t see your point. OK, buy whoever you want and let’s see what happens. It’s like that. Why can’t some fans be just a little bit positive? You guys doubt any new youngster every time. Why can’t you believe we bought them for some real reason? Oh and you say they might not make it. And what if they don’t make it? If we bought 20 young players and one of them became the new Cristiano Ronaldo, I would be fucking happy, even though the other 19 wouldn’t make it. And yes, I agree with Fergie. I don’t see any player we could get, who I would call a “genius”. Sneijder? Are you kidding me? You’re talking about him as if he was like Zidane back then. He’s a very good player, but he’s nowhere near that. He’s just not a “must buy”, believe it or not. And yes, as supporters you can have a different opinion from that of the manager, you can even tell that, you can even protest, but NEVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THE PLAYERS, BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR PLAYERS, WHO MAKE OUR TEAM AND IF YOU DON’T RESPECT OUR TEAM, YOU CAN FUCK OFF! Clear enough?

  58. Aj says

just seen a story saying that sòme middle east businessmen has joined the red knights and that the group could wait 18mths to buy the club if need be. Ed, you act like you know whats going on there, any truth to the story.

    • says

@Aj – Thanks for the dismissive tone there Aj. Anyway, this is the Goal.com story you’re referring to I believe so I’m taking that with the pinch of salt. Having said that the RKs did attract some seriously heavyweight interest before including attention from China and the Mid East. But remember, this is a group of people trying to achieve two things 1) Return a significant chunk of the club to fan control at some point down the line, 2) Pay a fair market rate given the debt and club profitability. The issue has never been raising money, the issue is where it comes from (i.e. not debt, not 1 investor) and the Glazers’ price.

  59. says

It’s clear we have little money and are spending it on younger players in the hope they turn into a money-making project like Ronaldo turned out to be.

If the club really wants to save money they should be looking at not paying Owen Hargreaves a good wage when he hasn’t played regularly for 2 years.

  60. Aj says

gotta be dismissive on these stories Ed as you can never be sure what is real and what isnt. we read everyday stories that hasnt any truth at all so this could be another one of those, we all heard what MUST intend to achieve but the real question is, can they successfully remove those glazers?. I’m nit a big fan of protest as you know but I am a big fan of the idea and intentions of getting rid o the glazers and sorting out the debt. with any luck the glazers will see sense within the new few months.

  61. Aj says

**** I am NOT a big fan of protest. **** with any luck the glazers will see sense within the NEXT few months. I had to correçt these two areas as mistakes were made and I felt I had to correct them. come on glazers sell up, I know MANCHESTER UNITED is valued at £1.2b ($1.8b) but the glazers want £1.5b and the red knights want tto pay apparently between £800m-£1b, somethings gotta give and I believe at some point the glazers will accept £1b for our club as the knìghts are unwilling to up their price.

  62. captainhormonecaptainhormone says

Aj….so if we dont protest the glazers will just up and leave yeah….oh, ok then…dont bother applying any pressure as AJ reckons with any luck they’ll sell for a billion in a few months anyway…oh the green and gold campaign is pointless according to the fountain of knowledge that is AJ…and he’s just commented that he wants the glazers to sell up…that message must be shaking the very foundations of old trafford and have old Malc’s families ring pieces squirming

Thank fuck for you AJ…..glad to know you’ve got our backs

The Glazers are here for the long haul, trying to hold on as long as they can till their pot of gold is realised – mobile broadband showing United matches around the world, free of EPL regulations to share the cash.

75,000 last Monday, plenty of AON shirts, pies scoffed and the Megastore full.

Only a crazy offer of £1.5-£2 billion will shift them

  64. Sidsidney says

The Glazers will need fresh investment eventually

And when they do their position will be significantly weaker than it was this summer after they secured the £500m bond

So that’s the time to make another bid – when they need more dosh

And by this time performances on the pitch might have been affected due to a lack of major investment, and they will have probably spent some of our profits on the PIKs

  66. Alfonso BedoyaAlfonso Bedoya says

For me it’s a real problem.

My love for United is equalled by my loathing of the Glazers.

As much as I want the Glazer gone… I also want them sent packing in defeat, not with a big fat profit… and I see no scenario where we get our club back and they take a loss.

United fans are too addicted to success to suffer a few lean years in order to drive the price down.

One day we will rid United of these parasites… but it will be a bitter victory, as the Glazers will, without doubt have made a fortune.
