Poll: Has Berbatov earned new deal?

February 16, 2011 Tags: , Polls 43 comments

Reports indicate that Dimitar Berbatov is in talks to extend his Manchester United contract, with the Bulgarian striker’s deal due to expire in June 2012. The 30-year-old, who earns around £100,000 a week, is set for a 75 per cent pay increase following a season in which the former Tottenham Hotspur player has scored 20 goals in 29 games.

Indeed, United could break an unwritten club rule by offering the player a new three-year deal and not a rolling one-year contract often given to players over 30. Now in his third season with United, Berbatov could leave the club for free next June unless a new deal is signed.

The question is – has Berbatov done enough this season to justify the huge pay rise and long-term deal?

Has Berbatov earned (potential) new deal?

Berbatov has done well this season due mainly to that man rooney. He does deserve a new contract but by no means can he demand top money

captainhormone - February 16, 2011 Reply

no, top scorer or not, still too inconsistent

plus he is 30 now so i’d cash in and get Benzema if possible

Curtis - February 16, 2011 Reply

I voted no, but it was to the specifics of the deal and not the general idea.

That pay raise is just too big, he doesn’t deserve that much money. Also, I think a 2 year deal would be a little better.

The trouble with Berba is that the team has to be built round him & he is far too inconsistent for that. Often he slows things down when they need speeding up. We would get decent money at the end of this season for him. If Hernandez is going to be the player we hope he is then he has got to be given his chance. Possibly Wellbeck & Macheda offer quality back up.
There are two big problems. Berba does, to an extent, disguise the complete lack of creativity high up in the middle of the field & SAF has no record of moving on players if they don’t cause trouble. If we did buy a top quality mobile & creative midfielder, & everybody knows we need one, then we would not need Berba.

Alfonso Bedoya - February 16, 2011 Reply

Yeah… let’s get rid of Berbs… and while we’re at it, let’s retire Scholes and Giggs… and Rooney can fuck off, just to be thorough… who needs creative players?

Then we can have a team that even Calvino would be proud of.

captainhormone - February 16, 2011 Reply

whats scholes and giggs got to do with it?

Dinkinflicker - February 16, 2011 Reply

I must admit that Berba has gone a long way to winning me around this season, however i’d still question how many games where he has excelled away from home since joining us.

captainhormone - February 16, 2011 Reply

i cant answer that but i hazard a guess the answer can cunted on one hand

Mongoletsi - February 19, 2011 Reply

“Cunted”?

George Bestest - February 16, 2011 Reply

The same Benzema who had an opportunity to join United and chose Madrid? – United play second fiddle to no team, he didn’t want to join us then we don’t want him.

Back on topic, Berbatov is a fantastic player who loves the club glad to see the big man get a new deal, our away woes are not on Berbatov’s shoulders alone, we’ve conceded a lot more away from home and the service to the front men has been no where near as effective in those games either.

I honestly can’t believe that people still doubt a guy who has played a major role in getting us to the top of the league table.

Every week there’s calls for a different player to go for one reason or another… some deserve to go… Carrick, Gibson, O’Shea, Anderson… for being rubbish.

Scholes and Giggs for being old, Rooney for being a cunt… now it’s Berbatov… cause he doesn’t suit our system… what system is that?

It’s ridiculous… Last year it was because he didn’t score enough… this year he’s scoring loads, but he doesn’t deliver against the big teams… but then he doesn’t play against the big teams… and some would have you believe it’s because he’s shite… but maybe it’s because their preferred midfield is what’s really shite… that’s why we need to play 3 of them to do the work of 2, so there’s no room for 2 strikers.

Berbatov was bought to partner Rooney… and there is real promise there… if we’d just let them get on with it… but we need a proper fuckin midfield to support them.

And you could say the same for the whole bastard team… why single out Berbatov?

ian - February 16, 2011 Reply

There is only one important debate. Why have we neither a top quality creative nor defensive mid-fielder? If we had only one of these we would be a top quality team & with both ……. Berba, Nani, Rooney would immediately look even better players.

CUS HE DOESN’T SUIT US AS OFTEN AS HE SHOULD DO/HAVE/COULD

Whether thats his/fergie or my fault i dont know…

Mongoletsi - February 19, 2011 Reply

That’s the nail hit on head.

WHEN he plays like a classic Utd forward, then we love him, and he scores. But for every game he sprints about, there’s another he slouches and sulks.

But ffs… it used to be EVERY game he was sloooooooow.

So keep him for another season and see if he can keep it up, or cash in while his stock’s well high?

redbob - February 16, 2011 Reply

Of course he deserves a new contract.. he has been brilliant this season, and
without him I dont think we would have been in the position we have been in now.
Its not just the goals, but alot more than that as well..

Alfonso Bedoya - February 16, 2011 Reply

Sorry Mate, but I just don’t get that.

Blaming any one player for our poor away form, is wrong, and he’s been brilliant at home.

captainhormone - February 16, 2011 Reply

its not just him alf, but he is the most high profile of our signings…and tbf, Gibson, O’shea and evans cost us fuck all…however they need fucking off too

of course he is class, im not doubting that…never have, but he’s proven more often than not that he isn’t what we need when it truly matters….now if he signs a new deal and we get 4 years excellent service out of him i will be the 1st one to hold my hands up and say im wrong…however, based on the 2 and a half seasons he has been here he has performed admirably half of the 1st half of this season (in total, on average)

imo, its not enough based on cost etc….and yes Hargreaves has been shite too on that basis

Loftyhouse - February 16, 2011 Reply

He deserves it if only for the hattrick against the dippers and that overhead kick.

herbie simms - February 17, 2011 Reply

Berbatov is a world class player but the players around him are not, so they can’t read him, therefore its taking him a while to fit into the team and score goals. The problem now with Berbatov is he is just getting use to the style of Man United and he is already 30 years old.
If he would have arrived at Old Trafford at age 24 or 25 then you can justify increasing his salary. Berbatov will fit in perfect at Barcelona, a team full of world class players. But now he is scoring the goals so you must give him the respect. Next season with Valencia on the right and Gareth Bale on the left with Berbatov up front, you will see a different team. Word is, Bale will be a United player only if Tottenham fail to qualify for the champions league.

Triggs - February 17, 2011 Reply

“Word is”

Is that word, “bollocks”?

Mongoletsi - February 19, 2011 Reply

I want to be nice to you Herbie, I really, really do.

But you’re talking absolute bollocks.

He’s been surrounded by Rooney, Nani, Ronaldo, Tevez… plus Carrick and Fletcher when they were actually good. Not to mention Giggs and Scholes. Or Rio, Vidic, Evra… sorry mate but you’re way off the mark.

p.s. Bale = no chance.

Andrew - February 17, 2011 Reply

Thing is Horms…although I don’t think he’s justified a massive salary increase I’m not sure we should fuck the cunt off so to speak. Alf’s got a point – the midfield is average and there is real promise with Roo now and for next season…would we be getting rid of Berba just at the wrong time? Could we lock him into another contract and have him as a support to the burgeoning talent of Chicharito? Then should a big money offer come through maybe we look at it…I’d give him another contract and would argue the £175K salary rumours are frogshit cooked up by his agent or some other cunt associated with him….

the fuck? why are berbatov’s performances down to rooney?

captainhormone - February 17, 2011 Reply

have you people voting yes had a brain relapse and forgotten about the first 2 years, and half the games this season where he has consistently done fuck all????

ffs….football fans are so fucking fickle, but they also clearly have fucking short memories….he is doing well, but its still not good enough..

Yep, just like the same Berbatov who turned us down originally to join Spurs….ffs, but lets not let facts get in the way of a good argument

sensible post……i’d buy into that on that basis

since when was he earning 100k a week with us, has he signed a new deal in the two and half years hes been with us or was that what we gave him from the start

weve not been paying him 100k a week for the last two seasons of embarrassing shite hes delivered have we?

fergie out ffs

sidney - February 17, 2011 Reply

Wait and see if he delivers in the big games
Despite what some people think, we haven’t played any big games yet this season
If he delivers in the latter stages of Europe and in the big away games from now ’til May, then he has officially had his best season for United and is worth the dosh IMO
The chance of a new contract will make him play better n all. Don’t just hand it over, make him play for it
Also, the wages being banded about are ridiculous… but what’s what happens when you cave in and pay your best player a ridiculous amount to keep him at the club. We’re being made to pay for that now. If reports are to be believed, even the squaddies think they’re worth £80 grand a week. Fuck all you can do about it really

captainhormone - February 17, 2011 Reply

another sensible, grounded post…….and from a student too

Alfonso Bedoya - February 17, 2011 Reply

I’t’s not about Rooneys new contract… it’s down to Barca, Real, The Renties and The Bitters… they are the ones that have changed things… Yaya Toure – 175k, Kaka – 165k, Benzema – 145k, Adebayor – 150k, Ronaldo – 220k…

The bare has been raised by these clubs, to sign of these players… if you want to compete, then you’ve got to pay… simple as.

145k for Adebayor ffs…

If Ronaldo tires of life at Real… what do you think he’d cost to get him back? You’d be lucky to get change from £300k.

captainhormone - February 17, 2011 Reply

**herbie mode** imagine a front 3 of rooney, ronaldo and nani now……..hmm mmmm

i’d pay it….

sheesh - February 17, 2011 Reply

The way we play now, with the total lack of flair/dynamism/movement/creativity in midfield, we need someone who can hold onto the ball long enough to allow other players to move forward and has the ability to make a decent pass, someone who can work alongside Rooney.

Berbatov was drinking in the last chance saloon this season, so based on his goals and improved performances this season, I will say yes….but he only just makes it.

he frustrated me, but i let it go as he is young…same as i did with ronaldo (who from his debut, i said would be world player of the year one day) and anderson too

berbatov is different as he is 30, already accustomed to the premiership, europe, international football etc…

no to bale, no more spurs softshites, same for modric

JKL - February 21, 2011 Reply

Classy player and a lot of goals this year (tap ins/headers). He slows us down, he is fine to have in the team if he hangs around near the box, the others do the hard work and he finishes it off. Am happy to keep him as long as we have a pacy alternative.

We need 3 or 4 new, hardworking, energetic and able midfielders and we should buy Bale to replace Giggs, if not, the next few years will be a struggle, maybe our demise.
