Rant Cast 109 – and now the comedown

This week on another packed Rant Cast regulars Ed and Paul look back at Manchester United’s victory over Queens Park Rangers, achieved with a touch of good fortune.

When Manchester City lost at Arsenal to cement United’s eight point Premier League lead fans confidence was sky high. Hubris is a dangerous emotion though and we discuss whether over-confidence played a part in United’s loss to Wigan Athletic this week.

We talk transfers, with renewed speculation about Nicolas Gaitan, Eden Hazard and Paul Pogba. Also: who will United bring in to replace outgoing strikers Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov.

We touch on youth, with the Academy side taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this week. Will the latest crop do enough to impress Sir Alex Ferguson?

And finally we look ahead to United’s fixture with Aston Villa on Sunday, where the Reds will look to bounce back from midweek defeat.

Happy Birthday to co-host Paul!

Haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but if you haven’t considered it, what do Ed and Paul think about NOT bringing in another striker even if Owen, Berba and Macheda leave?

I honestly don’t think we need one. Goal scoring hasn’t been a problem, we have barely used our golden boot winning striker this season and teams like Barca (who most people on here seemed obsessed with emulating) often play without a real striker, never mind having 4/5 to choose from.

The days of Yorke/Cole & Solksjaer/Sherringham are over. We need more quality and options in midfield, not up front.

Good point re: Rafael vs. Jones at right back supporting Valencia. Stumped as to why Ferguson broke that partnership on Wednesday. We paid for it almost as much as Giggs in with Carrick. Without Scholes the defenders and wide midfielders have fewer options and are more isolated too.

Good podcast as always. I too was hugely disappointed with the performance at Wigan. It was the worst performance that I had seen for some time, up until maybe the last 10 minutes when Nani and Cleverley were playing – at least we then had some impetus and attacking threat. Giggs was truly awful that match, as was Rooney, Chicarito, Young, Jones and so on. Not one player stood out. Evans was lucky to still be on the pitch. I too am worried about the future.

Scholes cannot be relied on next season, he is simply too old. Without him though, our team do not know what to do with the ball when building from the back – no one makes the running into space and demands the ball and keeps it ticking over – perhaps Cleverley can do that to some extent, but he is too injury prone and inconsistent so far. I am worried that we will not purchase suitable replacements for the midfield. This is still our Achilles’ heel in both a defensive and offensive sense. Buying young, unproven players is going to cost us. We need to add two top experienced and talented players to our midfield mix, otherwise we can kiss goodbye to all the cups and only aim for the top four next year.
