His personality wasn't the problem, unlike Moyes, if only he'd had us win more often, in a more exciting way. His madness only became frustrating when it was obvious he was bullshiting.

Finally got around to reading Laurie Lee's trilogy
Cider with Rosie
As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning
A Moment of War

Absolutely wonderful writing - strongly recommend all three.

Also just read Shaun Bythell's 'Diary of a Bookseller'.
Also a quite exceptional, wonderful book. Loved it.

Cider with Rosie is one of my favourite books, i've never read anything quite like it. The writing is magical. The other two never stayed with me the same, in fact i'd need to look them up to remember what they were about......

Had to do it. :ymhug:

If you like movies like Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid etc check this guy out....

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2494362/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_1

The film sounds great but i just read this book......

It was excellent, gothic western madness, preachers, freaks, fishhooks, flawed heroes. Great stuff.
Got it here..

Agreed Laz, it is truly magical writing. The style persists too with the other two books - As I Walked Out is his leaving home and heading for Spain just before the Civil War breaks out; A Moment of War sees hime return to Spain to join the International Brigades.

I'm wondering - if you liked Cider with Rosie Laz - did you also read 'The Time of Our Singing' by Richard Powers? Another one where every word seems crafted to perfection.

I had to look it up. I remember thinking i must read that but totally forgot about it, add it to the long list of must reads. I'll give it a go next, i have it in a mobi library for my kindle.

I need a break from American political books and John Sandford novels.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you need a break from your normal reading list, here are 2 more you might like to try:
'Reservoir 13' by Jon McGregor. Took me a while to figure out what the author was trying to do, but when the penny drops it's one you can't put down.
'The Many' by Wyl Menmuir. Utterly awesome piece of writing.
