comparing The Fall's influence on music to the Charlatans and - wow - 808 State is sort of beyond me but each to their own.

thanks for the links but they are of little use to me here

If you want I will go in and make enquiries.

I wasn't comparing them , that post punk stuff was a bit too heavy fo me ,but I believe subliminally introduced us to other works.

I'd question Mark E Smith's socialism tbh. He was a bit of a piece of shit truth be told. I think he'd admit that too. The way he ran his band he was more a fascist dictator. Seems to remember him saying he idolised Ferguson more than anybody else, for his "control".

The Fall were class though, undoubtedly. And he was a great songwriter and wordsmith.

I don't think there is much doubt that he was a proper cunt. Not unusual to get great art out of highly driven and selfish people, though.

I definitely wouldn't count The Fall as one of my favourite bands (hence why I haven't forked out for a copy on vinyl) but there's absolutely no denying their (well, his) impact on music at the time and afterwards.

Same, not one of my favourite bands either

When you keep getting what are essentially session musicians in the style gets watered down a bit -and The Fall famously went through fucking hundreds of musicians. When you have one person determining what each person plays on their instrument, their discipline, because that person is so dominant, it can get a bit shit. You can become a parody, 25 years on.

I wouldn't say that happened to The Fall. But they had their moment IMO, like all bands tbf, when it all worked and they achieved something special.

Been listening to The Fall on the basis I hadn't given it a chance first time around , but no despite giving it a good shot it still sounds shit to me, basically no signing per say just a lot of shouting and noise in the background.
I fully understand that nuances of that early days music was lost on me and can be appreciated by fellow musicians but each to their and mine says that's fucking rubbish .
Watched and read several interviews and the lad was a real character who would have blown this forum apart with some of his views , and wasn't the angry leftie ( imo ) I thought he was .
Quite clearly suffered from years of abuse with smoking and drinking maybe other stuff.Cant thinking out of all that shit it's the smoking that gets them

Dreadful news regarding Liam Miller passing away. Had a young family too. Just awful.

RIP.
