Avoid defeat here and we go top - though we should be very much aiming for 3 points.
So why are we so lacking in excitement...? Is it because we're all assuming that its a false position and that even in going top at this stage, we don't really look like title contenders?

I dunno mate, being above the scousers always makes me feel good, regardless of how false it is/might be.
But you're right, we aren't a top team and all it does is give the Board false comfort that we.
We should be looking to smash the fuck out of them, at least when we lose at Anfield on Sunday, we won't be losing ground as it is today.
It's a Mickey Mouse season with Covid randomly affecting teams and knocking players out for a few weeks at a time. So we're good enough to win in these circumstances. But we don't yet look good enough to win in a normal season. Even when we have a good run of results, I have yet to see consistently impressive performances out of us.
It's hard to get excited because we could lose key first teamers to covid at any minute, which would fuck our entire season. We could go 10 points clear but lose Fernandes for a fortnight then we'd be struggling to make top 4.
