Manchester United warn of long-term economic effect of virus

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... s-to-clubs

The latest accounting period covers only 18 days of football’s lockdown but provides the first insight into the impact on the Premier League. Despite being one of the clubs best positioned to withstand the crisis because of their commercial and sponsorship deals, United’s third-quarter revenue fell by £28.4m to £123.7m. This was down to the pandemic’s impact on broadcasting and matchday revenues, which fell by £27.8m and £2.6m respectively. Commercial revenue increased by £2m to £68.6m because of new sponsorship deals. Year on year, United’s net debt soared by £127.4m to £429.1m.

Hi all. I haven’t paid much attention to the football yet since it started. Finding it hard to get that engaged with it, for various reasons. I hope we manage to sneak over the line into the CL though.

The way things are going, I think next season will be fucked by covid as well. So far every place that has started to open up has seen cases go up, so it’s hard to see how we’ll have spectator sports again until most people have already had it or a vaccine is widely available.

Premier League cancels £564m Chinese TV contract in blow to clubs’ finances

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... s-finances

One of the Prem's biggest foreign TV rights deal cancelled cos the chinese company couldn't pay the bill. All broadcasters have lost shitloads in lockdown. Sky and BT have lost about a billion between em. No live sport ultimately means no money.

So the Prem's financial black hole just got bigger. They'll pass it on to the clubs too, so like I keep saying now's the time to be clever with money cos the Prem's magic money tree has had a few branches lopped off it.

Yep. I heard Andy Mitten on a podcast a couple of days ago saying United was worried about the potential for sponsors to walk away from contracts if things get too bad. Another advantage the sugar daddy clubs have.

The gov have put plans to have fans back in stadiums on hold cos of the second wave. Old Trafford won't be full for a long time - probably most of the season. And broadcasters are gonna lose even more. More reason not to pay 100m for Sancho.

Sounds bad. Also sounds like it’s the ideal time for us to put in bids for players at French clubs...
